DSM-GUY HRTF* BAFFLE (*head
related transfer function) provides a simple
means to mount DSM microphones when not personally worn by a real person. Cost
for this advanced system is now $2600.
Provides an exact acoustical HRTF modification of the surrounding sound field so that all the psycho-acoustic cues recorded with DSM microphones retain full 3-Dimensional stereo sound performance.
Uses an advanced and patented Sorbothane material and is the first HRTF (dummy-head type) recording baffle that accurately replicates all the human head acoustical properties for VR realistic 3-Dimensional sound recording.
The acoustical modification of the 'soundfield qualities'
or HRTF produced by the baffles effect is what the DSM mics record. With
DSM-GUY, full-frequency 3-D ( 'virtual reality') stereo sound is as easy to
record as if using a single (mono) microphone!
GUY baffle disguised as a 'real person'
The supplied telescoping tripod mount allows the head to be positioned 4-8 feet above the floor but, the GUY baffle (alone) may be positioned directly on the floor, or any height desired on a stable surface that will not interfere with the sound reception.
Recordings of large orchestral or choral arrangements may
require a few of the optional 2 foot clamping extensions available for this
tripod. The additional height will facilitate more equal reception of close
to far sound sources when working with larger sound stages.
Please keep in mind that any object in close proximity to the recording head will alter ambient sound reception and have an effect on the resulting recording.
For example, placement directly onto a piano may work for solo vocal/piano arrangements, but placement on the seat of an upholstered high-back chair will at least block the rear ambient sound reception.
It's best to allow as clear a space as possible (all around the DSM+GUY mic) to avoid ambient soundfield distortions from occurring in the recording.
Using a HRTF GUY (or LiteGUY) baffle is a necessity for ambient stereo multitrack studio recording. This is because the microphone is now easily positionable in a known and repeatable fixed position. This maintains an exact and stable acoustic perspective for successive stereo tracks. (See more about multitrack 3-D recording method at: http://www.sonicstudios.com/multitrk.htm)
Ive tested GUY extensively in musical recordings of rousing
Big Bands, non-amplified vocal groups, acoustic & PAd Blue Grass,
and acoustic Floor-Harp duets with violin, Viola, Guitar, Mandolin with excellent
results.
