The D100/M1's larger back-illuminated LCD display, transport function buttons, and record/pause buttons are immediately appreciated and very accessible by being placed directly below the LCD display, but the even smaller REC Level knob is a bit disappointing.

Speaking of track editing, these more compact models are fully capable and 'stand-alone-complete' by supplying all the necessary button functions for fully editing any recorded tape without needing an accessory kit.  However, like Sony's predecessor models, digital interface requires further purchase of special I/O accessories now having to complement a different electrical  interface specification.   NOTE: Only the output is changed.

If you want reliable digital output, you'll need to get one of several newer interface accessories (these are backwards compatible with previous models) but the older look-alike interfaces accessories won't work consistently from the new D100/M1 decks' digital I/O jack.  Older versions of Sony's interface (like the SBM-1) accessories will fully function ONLY for Digital input on these new deck models.
The SBM-1 is now not the great quality improvement as with previous Sony mini-DAT decks.  The 'stand-alone' performance of the D100/M1 model is virtually on par with the benefits from using the SBM-1 enhanced signal processing ability.

LINE or MIC inputs now operate off the same input jack and is function switch selected (see photo of recording setup switches on the deck's bottom side), but there's now a separate output for jack for LINE and HEADPHONES so that simultaneous phones monitoring and a separate line feed is possible with these new models.

Headphones output power and driving ability could always be better on most all portables, but is a 'night & day' improvement over the severely limited D7/D8 models.  Headphones driving power has been increased from 5 to 20 milliwatts per channel and the 16 ohm (very low impedance) phones drive ability is exceptional for driving the excellent MDR-F1 headphones.  Using sensitive headphones for listening/monitoring is still a good idea, but not as desperately needed.

The newly designed (not just updated) tape transport has proved to be nearly perfect in being most reliable in handling both 2 and 3 hour tape thickness without those (rare, but) occasional 'tape-eating' or blank recording incidents for which the predecessor decks were infamous.  However, the new transport now initially loads (also RW/FFs) the tape noticeable very much slower as compared to most any portable around.

This slowness reminds me a lot of the sluggish loading time experienced with the (now very vintage) Denon DTR-80P/Casio DAR-100 models; also exceptionally reliable.  I would suggest not being in any kind of a hurry to get the tape loaded, Rewound, or Fast Forwarded.

Perhaps it is best to keep in mind that (at least with mini-drum sized DAT decks); "haste" may indeed equate to "waste".  This new model does indeed handle tape very, very slowly.  So expect to be 'happily' patient, not quickly disappointed and in need of sometime acquiring a full size deck for more satisfying time-efficient tape editing.
